Finding Patio Awnings that Are Made to Last

Patio AwningsPatio awnings vary in quality and durability, so before making a purchase it’s important to know what features to look for. One of the first parts of an awning you will want to inspect is its fabric. There are two common types of materials used in awning fabric: organic fibers and synthetic fibers. Fabric woven from organic fibers is often cotton-based. The problem with this type of fabric is that it can be damaged by water and it is susceptible to mildew, so it isn’t exactly well suited for the outdoors where it will be exposed to all kinds of weather conditions. Synthetic fabric, on the other hand, is not susceptible to water damage or mildew growth, so it is the ideal choice to put on patio awnings.

In addition to the composition of the fabric, there are also differences in how fabric is colored. Sometimes, color is simply painted or sprayed on top of the fabric. This isn’t an ideal solution because the thin layer of paint will begin to fade, crack, and peel off. A better method is solution dying. During the solution dying process, the individual fibers that make up the fabric are dyed; in other words, the fabric is completely colored all the way through. The result is a long-lasting, colorfast fabric that won’t flake, chip, or peel.
